1. Invest in expensive paints

Oil paints can be expensive, but some expensive ones are definitely worth investing in. Generally speaking, the more expensive they are, the higher the quality. Of course, if you are doing multiple undercoats, do it first with a cheaper oil paint; then just save the most expensive paints for the top coat.

2. Do not use acrylics over layers of oil paint.

One of the main properties of oil paint is that it dries incredibly slow. In fact, it can take a long time to dry. With this in mind, you should not use another type of paint, such as acrylic, on top of the oils. Acrylics, for example, dry very quickly. If you apply a coat of acrylic over a coat of oil paint, the acrylic coat will eventually crack or peel because the oil paint will take much longer to dry.

3. Try using acrylic paint for the lower layers of paint.

Instead, you can try using acrylic paint for the lower layers of the paint. The paint will dry very quickly and you can apply oil paint on top without any problems. The advantage of this is that you can do the bottom layers very quickly; They will dry very quickly too, so you won’t have to wait too long before starting the rest of the paint.

4. Learn the rules and then experiment

Painting is all about creativity and self-expression, although the act of creating a quality painting requires a lot of skill, time and experience. It is important to learn to paint and to do it well; Master the basic techniques and take the stage where you can complete a good painting. Once you are sure of your abilities and skills, then you should experiment with your creativity. Try new things; take standard techniques and make up your own keys and twists here and there.

5. Avoid cracking by using the fat-on-lean technique

Fat over lean basically means making each layer of paint thicker than the last. The purpose of this is to prevent cracking; thinner layers will dry faster than thicker layers on top of them. So when it comes to your first coats, use thinner paint and less oil (as mentioned above, you can alternatively paint the first coats with acrylics). As you work your way up to the top coat, thicken the paint and add more oils.
