Nowadays, getting exotic pets is no longer a difficult task. It is important to know how to properly care for these pets. South American Chinchillas are known for being cute and boisterous. People like to keep these little rodents as pets. However, one must know and understand that these little ones come from nature and therefore take time to adapt to the new environment.

Some important points to keep in mind regarding Chinchilla are below.

1. These rodents are most active during dusk and dawn. Therefore, during the day care must be taken that they are kept in quiet places.

2. The females are quite active and aggressive compared to the males. They tend to show more same-sex aggression compared to their opposite-sex counterparts. These little guys can get irritated easily. When disturbed, females have been known to spray urine. They can also bite their own fur. This could be a sign of poor nutrition, stress, or too much noise.

3. Female chinchillas mature at 7 months and can breed after that. Their gestation period lasts 111 days. They can mate up to 3 times a year and have 1 to 2 pups per litter.

4. These rodents prefer a lot of green grass and fiber in their diet. They have a delicate digestive system and therefore should be given sugary treats in moderation.

5. Chinchillas must be handled with care. These little guys like to nibble and chew on anything they come across, so keeping them in a cage is recommended. Since these rodents have a wild streak, it takes them a while to tame and adapt to their surroundings. These are low maintenance pets, however, they love all the attention.
