The other day I was reading an anti-aging skin care guide distributed by a cosmetics company. There was some great advice, but every anti-aging skin care treatment they recommended was a product from her own line. I guess that shouldn’t be surprising.

They mentioned that ultraviolet radiation from the sun damages the cellular structure of the skin. They said that’s why their products contain sunscreen.

They didn’t mention in their anti aging skin care guide that UVA rays are the most damaging and that sunscreens only protect against burns caused by UVB radiation. Sunscreen is commonly recommended in anti-aging skin care treatment.

I’m trying to let people know that while sunscreens can prevent kids from getting burned, they don’t protect the deeper layers of the skin. New research indicates that sunscreen may somehow cause melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer.

They inhibit the tanning process. They inhibit the absorption of vitamin D. They inhibit UVB rays, but not UVA. You rarely see any mention of the difference in an antiaging skincare guide.

That doesn’t mean you can go out and spend the whole day in the sun without protection. If you expect any part of your body to be exposed for more than 15 minutes, then you should use a zinc oxide sunscreen. It is available at many store brands, including CVS and Walgreens.

If you are truly looking for an effective anti-aging skin care treatment, you should consider COQ10. Researchers have been amazed at the antioxidant activity that COQ10 has on skin cells. Of course, it has to be produced in the right way or it won’t penetrate deeply, but some of the best anti-aging skin care treatments contain it.

COQ10 can actually undo some of the damage that was done when you were under 20 and protects skin from UV damage that could occur today. The anti-aging skin care guide she was reading didn’t mention that. Probably because the cosmetics company has chosen not to include the ingredient in their anti-aging skin care treatment as it is quite expensive.

They suggested exfoliation in their anti-aging guide to skin. It never ceases to amaze me that cosmetic companies suggest exfoliation.

It’s true that some cases of acne are caused by a buildup of dead skin cells, but daily cleansing removes them. Exfoliation is not a good idea for antiaging skin treatment. The layers of the skin have become thinner with age. With daily cleansing and extra exfoliation, you’ll only end up damaging your face even more.

An anti-aging skin care guide should tell you about the importance of good nutrition, rehydration, drinking water, daily cleansing, and safe natural substances that truly support the skin’s ability to “heal” itself. But I guess you can’t expect that from a cosmetics company that sells an anti-aging skin care treatment.

Maybe a dietary supplement company should publish a guide to anti-aging skin care. Maybe, they should be the ones making skin care products.
