I have been studying yeast infections since 2000 when my wife at the age of 21 received her first infection. Since then, I have been studying the causes of these infections and have written several essays on the subject. I hope the information you find on this page will be beneficial to you, so let’s get started.

Causes of yeast infections

Believe it or not, these infections are not only a common problem for women, but they are also common in men. This type of infection is usually caused by having an extra ordinary amount of the fungus Candida albicans on the skin. Normally this fungus is present in minute amounts located in the mouth, vagina, skin and digestive tract. In these small amounts it usually does not cause disease or symptoms.

So what causes Candida albicans to rise and eventually cause symptoms of a yeast infection? Well, there are several conditions that make the infection favorable for it to occur. These conditions are being pregnant and being in the process of taking antibiotics.

Being pregnant causes an increase in yeast infection. Because? Well, you must understand that your body is going through a lot of changes and it is very difficult to keep track of all the chemical changes in the vaginal area. Typically, during the second trimester of pregnancy, the vaginal secretions that are produced will contain more sugar than normal. The yeast then feeds on the excess sugar which causes the yeast to grow until an imbalance of the Candida albicans fungus occurs.

The other condition that makes yeast infections favorable is taking antibiotics. Some may wonder why antibiotics cause these types of infections. Well, while antibiotics kill the bad bacteria, they also kill the good, protective bacteria in your body. Once the protective bacteria has been killed, an imbalance occurs in the body that can cause the Candida albicans fungus to grow until infection develops.

Yeast Infection Symptoms

I understand that in going through the infection, there will be times of pain and grief that is intolerable. Some of the symptoms of this infection are itching and burning. Also for men, a rash can appear after having sex with an infected partner. A burning sensation may also occur where the infected area feels hot. Also, this type of infection can cause the infected area to swell and hurt when touched.

For some of you reading this article, this may be the first time you are experiencing these symptoms and you may not be sure if you have a yeast infection. If this is the case, then I recommend that you see a doctor immediately to make the correct diagnosis because there are some STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) that experience similar symptoms. Therefore, consult a doctor if you are not sure.

Yeast Infection Treatments

The only way to get rid of this infection is to learn that over the counter lotions and ointments will not cure the infection in 1 day. By no means will you remedy your yeast infection with creams, ointments, and antibiotics. Actually, some of these solutions can make the infection worse and more painful. This may be shocking to some, but it must be accepted in order to get rid of this painful infection.

You want to realize that a yeast infection is not just a “superficial” problem that can be treated with creams or other types of medications. This infection is largely an internal dilemma. That is why superficially treating it with some kind of cream will certainly not work.
