Without a doubt one of the most beautiful beaches on Earth. If you’re not in the least convinced by that claim, the National Geographic Society can certainly back it up. Trunk Bay in St John, US Virgin Islands also ranked high as one of the most photographed beaches. Why not? Imagine a quarter-mile stretch of powder-soft white sand, swaying palm trees and lush greenery, and of course, warm, crystal-clear waters. And that’s not good enough for you, take its gentle swells as a bonus.

Diving in Trunk Bay is nothing short of exciting, for both hobbyists and casual divers. There is an underwater snorkeling trail just offshore that sits in the center of the bay’s crescent cove. Fifteen underwater plaques identifying all of the bay’s coral and goldfish can be found along the 675-foot-long trail. One of the regulars that never fails to capture the amazement of divers are the leatherback turtles, which can grow up to 9 feet and weigh up to a ton.

Snorkeling equipment rental is available on the beach through the National Park Service. Facilities such as showers, restrooms, changing rooms, picnic tables, public telephones and a snack bar also add to the comfort of its visitors. For those wanting to sightsee above the water, a walk to the historic Annaberg Plantation can do the trick. This is just one of more than 25 plantations on St. John that were active in the late 18th century. Access to this historic part of the mills is included in the $ 4 admission fee.

If you’re in the mood for dining and shopping, a short trip to Mongoose Junction is all you need. Just 3 miles southwest of Trunk Bay, this commercial strip is home to inexpensive souvenir shops that sell anything from charming to bizarre duty-free. The Mongoose Junction is also where you can find the best restaurants in all of the Caribbean. Experience delicious grilled lobsters and other fresh seafood from the sea, as well as spicy western Indian cuisine such as the famous roti chicken and of course the local rum.

Don’t forget to put St. John’s Trunk Bay on your adventure list the next time you’re in the US Virgin Islands. Experience with your family and friends images of perfect beaches, idyllic snorkeling, the best shopping, good food and good times.
