One of the main villain characters in the Halo series; Gravemind is not a proper name, but a biological state that only a few of Flood’s parasitic race can achieve. In a way, he is the personification of the Flood race, its mouthpiece and its controller.

The basic purpose and objective of Gravemind is the consumption of all sentient life forms that belong to the galaxy. Only one Gravemind had matured before the character that appeared in the events of Halo. The former was wiped out by the release of the Halos by the mysterious race of beings known as the Forerunners.

The complexity of Gravemind’s real self is never properly understood. It is made up of thousands of corpses of both enemies and its own species with tentacles and an immensely intelligent brain. He is the mastermind behind the operation of the Flood and is considered capable of manipulating the Halo’s teleportation system to transport objects.

An interesting feature of Gravemind’s speech is its rhyming verses; he specifically uses iambic pentameter for his verses. Some of his momentous discourses follow an even more complicated metric form, the trochaic heptameter. His words addressed to the main protagonist, Master Chief, are full of paradoxes and enigmas. The antagonists of the Flood are considered divine and sacrilegious.

Gravemind plays a much larger role in Halo 3, where he is seen joining the human forces to defeat the Prophet of Truth before betraying them.

When the Master Chief manages to rescue Cortana from their clutches and destroy the human ship known as High Charity, which had been captured by Gravemind, he manages to survive the explosion and uselessly follow them. What happens after this is unclear, though Cortana does comment on how she tries to rebuild herself in Halo’s ring.
