After the summer months there are three big celebrations before the end of the year. Halloween in October, Thanksgiving in November and Christmas in December. The costumes can be worn at all three events for private parties, public functions, school and church activities, theater and other social functions.

If you are a very busy person, you may want to recycle last year’s costume to give it a new look and save time. It is not difficult to do. Here are some suggestions to get you thinking about how to redesign the costume.

Changing the fabric of the costume can be as simple as dyeing it in other colors, changing the top, shirt, skirt or pants, adding or removing fabric accessories such as scarves and headbands, making certain parts of the garment larger by padding with a cotton. padding or create rips or tears in the garment.

Change or replace accessories:

  1. Put on a wig or hairpiece and other facial hair.

  2. Wear a different mask or apply face makeup

  3. Wear a large rubber nose or ears

  4. wear unusual glasses

  5. change gender of clothing

  6. Change your shoes or walk on stilts or skates.

After making these new changes another character will emerge.

If you’d like to make another costume instead of upcycling, here’s a list of steps to start the process of a new costume.

  1. choose a character

  2. Select a mask, facial makeup, or alternative method of covering the head and face

  3. Check the contents of your closet and office giveaways

  4. Wear hairpieces, facial hair, ornaments, scarves, or hats

  5. Footwear

  6. essential accessories

If there are clothes, accessories, or accessories that cannot be built with your skills, rent or buy that item.

The most important first step is the choice of character. Draw and write your description on a piece of paper. Allow mistakes to happen here, not after you start making the costume.

Make a list of supplies needed for sewing, assembling, and building.

Designing and putting together a costume should be as much fun as attending a Halloween party. Time management is important to avoid unnecessary stress.

It’s in the details. Another design element is to refine the accessories. A particular hairstyle or accessory completes the look of the character. A witch wears a pointy hat and rides a broom, a clown has a red nose, a wizard carries a magic wand, and an angel has wings.

Depending on the personality, it is advantageous to make sure that the identification accessory is available. Sometimes this can be a problem. I made this mistake once and I won’t do it again!

  1. Know how the costume will be worn:

  2. Is it a private party or a public event?

  3. Is it to be held indoors or outdoors?

  4. Are you participating in a parade?

  5. Is there a costume contest? What are the categories?

These questions will help determine whether the clothing should be worn under or over the costume for warmth or coolness, the strength of the garments and accessories to hold together in outdoor weather, and comfort during hours of wear.
