How to Make Keychain Blanks

A keychain is a fun craft to make and it’s also a great gift for friends and family. Whether you’re looking to create a custom lettered one or just a simple circle keychain, this tutorial will teach you how to do it with your Cricut machine. You can even add a keychain display card to create a nice gift presentation or a sellable end product. This is a super easy Cricut craft for beginners and is sure to be a hit with your loved ones.

To start, you’ll want to prepare your acrylic keychain blanks. Remove any protective film that may be on them and use a lint free cloth to wipe away any dirt or smudges from the surface of the acrylic. It’s best to do this before you sublimate them as it will help to ensure that your images transfer properly without any distortion.

Once your acrylic blank keychains are clean, you’ll want to place a piece of release paper larger than the acrylic on the back of them. Once you’ve done this, close the press machine and ensure that everything is lined up correctly before opening it up again. This is important to avoid damaging your designs when mounting them onto the acrylic blank keychains.

Next, we’ll need to set up our project in Design Space. To do this, click on the + and choose New Project. On the New Project screen, select Upload. Next, we’ll need to choose the file that we want to cut out of vinyl. Once we have that selected, we’ll need to change the setting to premium vinyl and select a default pressure and a fine point blade. Once we have those settings selected, click Make It and follow the prompts to cut your vinyl pieces.

After your vinyl has been cut out, you’ll need to weed it. You’ll want to do this by pulling up the vinyl and then using your weeder tool to get out any remaining bits of vinyl around the acrylic piece. You’ll also want to remove any unnecessary areas of the keychain that you don’t want to engrave, as well as cut out your keychain chain if you’d like to include one.

Once you’ve trimmed down your keychains, you can add any embellishments that you would like to them. You could add a chain for a keychain, or you could paint them in your favorite colors and then attach a polymer clay charm to them. You could even apply a coat of Mod Podge over your keychains to give them a little extra protection and ensure that they’ll last for as long as possible. Once you’ve finished, attach your keychain to a keychain display card and you’re good to go!
