I often get emails from couples who believe they can’t conceive one gender over another because the girls or boys are relatives or because they have only been able to conceive a specific gender in the past. (For example, they have a house full of girls, but not boys.) Yesterday I received an email from a very kind woman who basically asked, “I have conceived three girls and I love them with all my heart, but this time, I really want to conceive a boy and give my husband a son. Is this possible?” since I seem predisposed to conceiving girls?”

I replied that it is very possible. Using the correct techniques and tools, there’s no reason why you can’t conceive of any genre. If there are girls in your family or you think you can’t conceive a boy, there are a few things we can look at and change to greatly increase your chances of having a boy. I will discuss these things below.

Why you may be predisposed to conceiving girls: The natural selection of gender really comes down to one thing: which chromosome of the sperm reaches and fertilizes the egg first. If you keep getting pregnant with girls, the cards of fate could be dealing daughters or there may be a specific reason why the X chromosomes from the sperm (which produce girls) keep winning.

There are basically three variables that determine whether the X or Y chromosome wins: the time of conception; the sexual positions you use to conceive, and the PH/acidity of the mother. In my experience, most women who have not been able to conceive a child tend to have a high pH. This scenario will greatly favor girls because male or Y sperm cannot survive in an acidic environment. Many times, I have seen women drastically change their PH and then be able to have a baby boy. I will discuss these variables, one by one, below.

A look at the calendar for a baby boy design: I often have people email me asking what time of the month is best to conceive a child. When I mention the time of the month corresponding to a time in a woman’s fertility cycle, I am sometimes met with a bit of confusion. I know that sounds very basic, and bear with me if you already know this, but what the calendar says doesn’t really matter. What ultimately matters is when you conceive relative to when you ovulate.

If you are trying to conceive a boy, it is essential that you do not try to conceive too soon. As I mentioned before, male sperm are naturally weak. This is nothing you’ve done wrong. It’s just the characteristic that nature gave to the Y sperm to balance things out. To make up for this, male sperm are also very fast, which you can use to your advantage.

To conceive a baby boy, you will need to conceive on the day of ovulation. And, if he’s had trouble with this, ask yourself how well the ovulation predictor methods he’s used in the past have worked. I strongly believe that techniques that require guessing (rhythm method, basal temperature and cervical mucus recording) should be abandoned for methods that explain it more precisely, such as saliva or urine ovulation predictors. (I prefer saliva to urine as you can test at any time and you can reuse saliva models.)

Consider changing the sexual positions you have been using to conceive: Remembering that male sperm are weak, you should use sexual positions that place the sperm as close to their intended destination as possible. This means deeper penetration. I often find that couples try to conceive using the sexual positions that worked to get pregnant the last time. This is fine if gender is not important to you, but if you want a boy, use rear entry or positions where the woman bends and raises her legs to allow for a deeper deposit. Using a pillow under the pelvic area can also help.

It’s about its acidity: Of these three variables, I think this is the most important. I truly believe that if you have only conceived girls in the past, the first culprit to check is your PH. Male sperm will rapidly deteriorate and die if their PH is too high and checking for this is as easy as obtaining PH test strips and then testing as directed. This will tell you very quickly if you are naturally acidic (and most women are, but women likely to conceive girls are often even more so).

Don’t be discouraged if this is true for you, because you can change your level with a little diligence. There are basically two ways to do this, but if your reading is very high and you want quick results, consider using both methods at once. You can follow an alkaline/low PH diet or shower with solutions meant to lower your PH. There are food lists and shower recipes that can describe this. Baking soda is usually not enough. I know it’s used very often, but if you use baking soda and then use the testers again, you’ll usually see that your reading didn’t change as dramatically. What usually causes the most dramatic changes is douching and dieting as a kind of one or two hits, used aggressively at the same time.

I know this may sound overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Use the tools available to you and approach this very methodically, approaching each variable until you are at the level or moment you need to finally conceive your sound.
